Swine flu ( influenza A (H1N1) ) - what you need to know
You will have seen the coverage in the media regarding swine flu
and the outbreak of the virus to a small number of people around
the world. Some of your members may be requesting more
information about swine flu and whether their Bupa International
policy covers them in the event of infection.
What is swine flu?
Swine flu is a respiratory disease of pigs caused by type A
influenza viruses. Though it does not normally infect humans,
the World Health Organisation has confirmed a new version of
swine flu (A H1N1 virus) that is contagious and is spreading
from human to human with cases reporting principally in the US
and Mexico.

Are your members covered?
Yes, Bupa members are covered for any consultations and
treatment they may need in relation to swine flu subject to the
terms of their policy.
However, there are some limitations regarding evacuation and
repatriation that need to be noted; the restrictions are mainly
in place to safeguard against spreading the virus further.
Some customers will request evacuation or repatriation from an
area that has a high number of confirmed cases. If customers are
asymptomatic, there is no need for evac or repat, and Bupa
International will not cover their costs if they choose to
evacuate themselves from that area.
If customers are symptomatic of swine flu, or have medical
confirmation that they have the condition, they should not be
evacuated. This is for 2 reasons:
They should not be on a commercial airline because of the risk
of spreading disease.
We maintain a global ethical responsibility to contain the
disease as much as possible and prevent geographical spread.
However, at the current time, the threat of humans contracting a
life-threatening form of the disease is very limited. If your
customers experience symptoms of swine flu, we recommend they
seek medical advice in the first instance through their local
doctor or hospital.
